Endocrine Disorders

Diabetes type 1 and type 2 come from different causes: In diabetes type 1, the pancreas does not make insulin, because the body’s immune system attacks the islet cells in the pancreas that make insulin. In diabetes type 2, the pancreas makes less insulin than used to, and your body becomes resistant to insulin.

Gestational diabetes is diabetes diagnosed for the first time during pregnancy (gestation). Like other types of diabetes, gestational diabetes affects how your cells use sugar (glucose). Gestational diabetes causes high blood sugar that can affect your pregnancy and your baby’s health.

They can happen over time when high blood sugar damages the nerves and blood vessels in the feet. The nerve damage, called diabetic neuropathy, can cause numbness, tingling, pain, or a loss of feeling in your feet. If you can’t feel pain, you may not know when you have a cut, blister, or ulcer (open sore) on your foot.

Typical thyroid conditions are: multinodular goiter (enlarged thyroid), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. Disorders of the parathyroid glands include hypoparathyroidism, hyperparathyroidism, and parathyroid tumors.

They include infections, cysts and growths, with or without pain. Some growths are benign, meaning not cancer, and some are malignant, which means they can spread. The most common breast conditions are painful breasts, mastitis (inflammation of the breast), cysts, benign lumps and cancer.

Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) is a medical condition in which a woman’s ovaries generate immature or partially mature eggs in large numbers during reproductive age. These eggs develop into cysts in the ovaries over time.

Hirsutism may be caused by: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This condition, which often begins with puberty, causes an imbalance of sex hormones. Over years, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) may slowly result in excess hair growth, irregular periods, obesity, infertility and sometimes multiple cysts on the ovaries.

A condition in which the neuroendocrine cells develop into tumours.
A neuroendocrine tumour may grow slowly or aggressively and spread to other parts of the body.
Many people do not develop symptoms and the tumour is detected incidentally. When symptoms occur, they can vary based on the location of the tumour. In rare cases, skin flushing or fluctuating blood sugar levels may occur.
Treatment depends on the type of tumour. Some approaches may include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Menstrual periods typically last four to seven days and occur roughly every 28 days. Examples of irregular periods include periods that occur fewer than 21 days or more than 35 days apart, missing three or more periods in row, and menstrual flow that’s much heavier or lighter than usual.

In girls, breast development, pubic hair growth, and/or menarche do not occur. In boys, genital and/or pubic hair development are absent. Short stature, decreased growth velocity, or both may indicate delayed puberty in either sex.

Menopause that happens before age 40 is called premature menopause. Menopause that happens between 40 and 45 is called early menopause. About 5% of women naturally go through early menopause. Smoking and certain medicines or treatments can cause menopause to come earlier than usual.

Dwarfism is short stature that results from a genetic or medical condition. Dwarfism is generally defined as an adult height of 4 feet 10 inches (147 centimeters) or less. The average adult height among people with dwarfism is 4 feet (122 cm). Many different medical conditions cause dwarfism.

Gynecomastia (guy-nuh-koh-MAS-tee-uh) is an increase in the amount of breast gland tissue in boys or men, caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone. Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts, sometimes unevenly.

Pituitary gland disorders include acromegaly, Cushing’s syndrome, diabetes insipidus, empty sella syndrome, hypopituitarism and pituitary tumors. Pituitary problems can be caused by pituitary tumors, most of which are benign.
